Latest News > Why Buy Reclaimed Wood Furniture

Reclaimed wood isn’t a new idea but it’s increased in popularity in the past 10-20 years, since people have become more aware of environmental issues.

There are many benefits of using reclaimed wood including:

  • Far more environmentally friendly.
  • The wood has already been cut down many years before and is just being repurposed, rather than new trees being cut down.
  • Better quality wood.
  • Reclaimed wood often comes from older trees than the trees that are harvested nowadays, and when measured on the Janka hardness scale, can score up to 40 points higher than virgin wood.
  • More variety.
  • Many trees that one finds in reclaimed wood are no longer grown or available or affordable today.

The character that one finds in reclaimed wood, whether used for furniture or floor boards, is incomparable to virgin wood. Every stain, every groove and chink in the wood, tells a story and add character to the unique piece. And no two pieces can ever be the same with this amount of character.

But as always, you’ve got to look out for a few things to ensure you don’t regret your purchase.

Here are a few things to look out for when buying reclaimed wood products:

  • Bugs – Ensure there are no beetle holes or ‘soft wood’
  • Cost.
  • Reclaimed wood products may cost more than virgin wood products because of the process it’s had to go through. It takes a lot more time and effort to prepare the wood so that it’s safe for consumer use, which includes nail pulling, debugging, deconstructing etc etc.
  • Scarcity – As each item will have its own character and uniqueness, you may not be able to source a whole lot of items that look the same or similar, but this is also the charm of using reclaimed wood

From an environmental, quality and character perspective though, you can’t go wrong with buying reclaimed wood products, as long as you buy from a reputable source.
